After a few months getting prepared for Focus ’16 and the launch of ‘Bespoke By Decca’, our exhibition space showing the entries was finally complete. Along with the prototype, each stand consists of an A1 board showing the collection as a whole and then just below, a 3d render and a detailed shop drawing of the selected prototype piece.

There was a real sense of excitement as the efforts towards this project were finally unveiled. It was interesting to get feedback on the prototype pieces, and discuss potential changes that would be necessary for the final piece, if it went into production.

We’d like to thank everyone who came and made this such a fun event, and we wish all entries the best of luck with the voting.

Elicyon

The bar cabinet seemed the best piece to develop because of the large number of different finishes and textures being used. The top section of the cabinet was modified to show how the finished piece would look. The light grey stained figured sycamore combines with bronze elements and is connected with a bespoke crackle lacquer on the interior, as well as a bronze leaf finish to add a touch of excitement to the focal point.

Eliska Design

We created a section of the table top which shows the particular veneer lay-up and also the brass detailing outlining the wonderful green figured sycamore. The sycamore finish was developed by the factory as an alternative to a green resin as originally specified. The end result proved to be just as effective.

‘We are very pleased with the prototype as it highlights the finishes to their maximum, which is key to the design.’

Helene Dabrowski

The prototype consisted of a door section made of flat-cut oak with moulded details in antique silver leaf. It certainly caught the eye and had dramatic impact with many drawn to the organic qualities of this collection.

‘Choosing the finishes was the best part. It was like being unleashed into an Aladdin’s cave. Of course, we were attracted to the most expensive straight away so we had to take some guidance on this.’

Landmass

We created another modified section, this time of a bigger sideboard, and hoped to show the relationship between the materials specified. The brass inlay worked well with the quarter-cut oak, which was laid up in a zig-zag pattern. It was a shame that the marble top was not completely viewable when it was put on the pedestal.

‘The exhibition area looked great, we loved the way the boards were suspended, minimal and simple which let the designs stand out.’

Laura Hammett

The swivel chair designed by Laura Hammett was produced unfinished in calico fabric and the bronze detailing on the design was made in stainless steel. The metal detail will eventually be created using a PVD coating which allows for a range of different finishes, including brass, copper and nickel and is good for customisation.

MKV design

The outdoor range designed by MKV Design includes a lounge chair, which we developed into their prototype piece. We used a solid unfinished teak frame and some surplus material to provide a better understanding of the final piece. The frame will eventually be stained and the metal details will be a bronze finish. The seat and backrest will be faux leather and the stitching detail will be added.

Siobhan Loates Design

The chaise designed by Siobhan was the result of a few revised shop drawings. The piece took a bit longer to develop due to the intricacies of the back detail and trying to get the angles correct. In addition to comfort, the combination of rounded edges and angular details had to be carefully considered.

‘The party was fun! It was good to meet the other designers and talk through the experience.’

UniQue Home

The bespoke handles that were specially created for the bedside table designed by Matt Mehra added the finishing touches to an otherwise unfinished piece. The table will eventually be in a high gloss, dark stain Macassar ebony finish as described on the finish board provided, and will have polished brass details throughout the collection.

The Judges

We tried to allow each of the designers a chance to discuss their inspiration and ideas for the collection with our four judges. We hoped they would have the opportunity to explain their concept in more detail and how they would develop the collection further, if through to the next round.
With the top 3 from the public vote progressing to the next round, an early understanding of each collection may prove to be valuable in making a final selection.
